Why Search Engine Rankings Change

Search Engine Positioning

If you watch your company’s search engine positioning, you probably notice that your website moves up and down the rankings and can even move from page 1 to page 2 and then, hopefully, back to page 1 again. In many cases small business websites can fall to page 3 and lower, reducing online visibility to relative obscurity. Why did this happen? What can I do to get it back on page 1? For most businesses this downward movement was simply caused by having a website with zero Search Engine Optimization integration, old HTML structure and/or lack of quality content and focus. If your website is less than 2 years old and you believe it contains proper SEO, quality structure and content, this downward movement could very well be the result of Google’s algorithm changes.

Google’s Algorithm Changes

Google became the industry giant because we know we can rely on Google search results to provide the information, products, services or businesses we are looking for. In order to continue to provide quality search results – and a quality user experience on the website you will land on after clicking a Google search result – they make adjustments to their algorithm quite frequently. To summarize, Google wants to deliver searchers to websites that are well structured, have a large amount of quality content towards the top of the page, and are deemed helpful by third parties through a number of factors which include links to your company website, social media links and conversation to and about your company, developed local business listings, and much more.
