Social Media Marketing – A Full Time Job

Social Media Complexities Can Seem Daunting

One of the most common questions we receive from small businesses is “Should I use Facebook and Twitter?”. My answer is almost always the same – “Every business should have a Facebook Page, every business should not have a Twitter profile”. What follows is a conversation about the importance of being active with social profiles, and a reminder that the word “social” is the first word in Social Media for a reason.

Facebook can be a very beneficial component to a small business content marketing strategy. My use of “content marketing strategy” rather than “social media strategy” was intentional. Business owners and managers need to begin thinking of all public-facing content as falling underneath the large umbrella of content marketing. Just as important as the initial conversation when a prospect calls your office, or the first email response they receive when they submit a lead generation form on your website, each written word in print or electronic form represents your brand and should be aligned with your overall marketing goals.

The Content Marketing Umbrella

Adria Saracino wrote a great article that describes the content marketing umbrella over at Distilled. In the article, she discusses our natural tendencies to create boundaries or “silos” and the importance of moving beyond a defined silo. I encourage you to take a few minutes and read her article, it may help you gain a new perspective on how all components of your marketing team can and should be aligned.
